St. Mary’s Primary School, Saintfield.
Making sure the ‘i’ in learning stands for the individual.
We are a friendly school with a warm and welcoming ethos. Our school originally opened in 1873 and relocated to our current campus in 1964. The school enjoys an attractive elevated site on the outskirts of Saintfield, close to the Rowallane Gardens, which we utilise in our learning activities. The well-maintained playgrounds are surrounded by fields and mature trees and include a beautiful climbing frame, sensory garden, balancing beams and a mini-pond. There is a well-equipped and resourced community playgroup in the school grounds. The school also provides pre-school care in the form of a Breakfast club which runs from 8am and After School Care for children until 5pm daily.
The well-kept accommodation, including new extensions, front and rear, comprises three classrooms with a networked system of computers, a multi-purpose gym/dining hall, a designated library/computer area, staffroom and administrative block. The school has facilities for disabled children and is designed for wheelchair access. The corridors are bright and cheerful with an array of the children’s mural work and the assembly hall has a well-designed climbing frame to promote the children’s physical development.
We recognise that children are at the heart of both our community and school. Our highly trained and motivated staff are committed to fully supporting your child’s learning. At St. Mary’s we take pride in supporting your child’s natural enthusiasms and talents. Our staff are friendly, dedicated and provide a safe environment in which all children are able to reach their full potential. We are especially proud of all our children from P1 – P7, and their unique talents.
Our strength lies in our size and our ability to offer more to each individual child. Providing access to withdrawal support; extra classes and extra learning time when needed. Small group teaching and one to one learning comes as standard in St. Mary’s and we are very proud of this.
Our parents are the first to say that St. Mary’s give you more and this was certainly proven to be the case during the pandemic as we guided and supported the pupils (and parents) through the home-schooling process. Making sure that each individual pupil had specific learning targets in Literacy, Numeracy and WAU that met their personal learning needs. Weekly learning packs were supported via Google classroom, recorded lessons and online live lessons on a weekly basis. The school community could access support from teachers at the touch of a button and this was a vital lifeline to our pupils and their parents.
At present we enjoying welcoming all our children back to school. In line with advice from the Educational Minister we are putting the Health and Wellbeing of our children first, and are delighted to announce that the school is developing a new sensory and nurture room to further enhance and complement the excellent educational provision on offer to the pupils.
As a school which promotes a Growth Mindset, we are proud that our pupils leave St Mary’s with a lifelong love of learning. As professionals we always put the extra effort in to ensure our pupils develop friendships and memories which will last a lifetime.
